Mona and Lisa will soon be rattling no more. At the end of this year the Utzenstorf paper factory will switch off its machines after 125 years of production – the third Swiss paper maker to do so within two years. One of Switzerland’s oldest industrial sectors is dying a slow death. Of 32 factories in 1980, only eight are still in operation, and the industry workforce has been halved.
