LZ: The paper mill in Perlen is celebrating its 150th anniversary. Yet the end of what is now Switzerland's last paper mill was once almost sealed.

Anyone entering the site of the Perlen paper mill cannot help but be amazed at its dimensions. Even the short tour of the site takes about 45 minutes, a spokesman tells us beforehand. For the long one, you have to allow at least twice that. On both tours, you pass the main attraction of the plant: paper machine 7, or "Heidi," as it is also known internally. The steel giant cost almost half a billion Swiss francs in 2010. Since then, it has been producing up to 360 000 tons of newsprint a year, making Heidi not only one of the largest, but also one of the most efficient paper machines in the world.
